The protagonist, Cassie, is spending the summer away from her home in California with her mom in Cape Cod before her junior year in high school. She has an encounter with a mysterious, slightly older boy on the beach. She helps him escape some thugs, and he gives her a piece of chalcedony for protection. He kisses her wounded hand and awakens something within her, then leaves before she can find out his name. With her heart already broken by the encounter, Cassie is further distraught when her mother informs her that the two of them need to go live with her grandmother in New Salem for the new school year instead of returning to California.
Cassie moves into her grandmother’s ancient house on Crowhaven Road and attends a new school, where she’s immediately intimidated by a trio of mean girls led by the honey-eyed beauty Faye, who is part of The Club – the school’s group of the privileged and the popular. Cassie meets the gorgeous blond Diana, who rescues her from a nasty encounter with Faye and her minions. Cassie spends the afternoon in Diana’s bedroom, which has posters of Greek gods and goddesses on the walls. Diana is in The Club as well, and, in fact, all of members of The Club live on Crowhaven Road. Soon Diana invites Cassie to eat with The Club in the special back room of the school’s cafeteria.
After Kori, the younger sister of two of the members of the coven (Christopher and Douglas Henderson) is killed, Cassie is kidnapped out of her bedroom in the middle of the night, taken to the beach and initiated into the coven in place of Kori. It is important in this tradition to have exactly twelve members in the coven. The Club has been reviving the tradition after it was abandoned by the families of Crowhaven Road two generations ago.
At Cassie’s initiation, she discovers to her delight that the mysterious boy she met in Cape Cod is part of the coven. His name is Adam, and he’s been away from school searching for hidden items of power referenced in their families’ Books of Shadow, and has just returned with the first:, a crystal skull of their most nefarious ancestor, Black John. The joy of Cassie’s reunion with Adam is quashed when she learns that Adam and Diana have been a happy, loving couple since long before she moved to New Salem.
The romance between Cassie and Adam intensifies, and Faye uses that fact to blackmail Cassie. Diana gets sick before the homecoming dance and begs that Cassie go with Adam to keep him away from Faye. Cassie gets primped and prepped by Melanie and Suzan.
The Captive
Adam and Cassie have sworn not to love each other for the sake of their beloved leader Diana. But Faye has caught them in their one embrace. Now she uses it to blackmail Cassie, forcing Cassie to lie to Diana and to dig up the strange crystal skull that gives them all such dangerous visions. Meanwhile, students are being murdered, and the witches are under suspicion. And Faye wants from Cassie the ultimate betrayal: her vote for Faye as coven leader.
The Power
Faye rules the Circle, while Diana reels from Cassie’s apparent treachery. Cassie and Adam are drawn more strongly together than ever. A new principal appears who seems to know all the Circle’s secrets and is dedicated to persecuting them. Cassie, no longer the shy girl she was only a few months ago, takes charge in solving the murders, the mystery of the crystal skull, and the true meaning of the Secret Circle.
